The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program has offered three-year awards of $159,000 to twenty seven current and former students of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

2024 graduate Jessica Schonhoff will pursue graduate studies in digital media literacy in Finland.

Senior Political Science and Entrepreneurial Management major Gurasis Singh will teach in Indonesia next year

Senior English and Developmental Psychology major Bernadette Rechek will spend next year teaching English in the Slovak Republic.

Honors students Anna Sachdeva, Ahmed Sharara, and Jack Tavakley have been recognized as Goldwater Scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. 

Beatrice Handlin of White Bear Lake, MN graduated from the University of Minnesota in Fall 2023. She won a Fulbright Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship and spent a year in Razgrad, Bulgaria teaching English as a second language.

Ally Glasford (2020) spent a year as an academic coach with City of Lakes AmeriCorps before spending 2021-22 as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Italy. 

Honors student Sayumi Ranasinghe graduated this month with a B.S. in Microbiology and will spend next year at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany as a Fulbright researcher. Sayumi will take her experience studying viral diseases to a project on con-infections of avian influenza and Newcastle disease.

Biochemistry graduate Madison Cocker will spend the coming year in Germany at the University of Tübingen studying the impact of two extracellular matrix proteins on islet transplantation outcomes with potential therapeutic applications to Type 1 diabetes.

Rising seniors Alharith Dameh and Kalybe VanWatermeulen have been selected to the cohort of 2025 Astronaut Scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. In addition to scholarship funds, they will receive mentoring and professional development support and have the opportunity to present their research at the ASF Innovation Symposium.
